This book is fantastic for all middle school kids, especially of Latino descent or where gangs of any kind exist. The subplot of budding love deals with exactly the kind of relationships middle school boys are thinking about--liking a girl and not knowing why.

Issues dealt with in this book are; racism, poverty, gangs, responsibility, fatherless households, siblings with different fathers, unemployed parents just to name a few. I'm an ESL teacher in Oregon and my kids really enjoyed it. They all wanted to read the second book.
