When Lady Selene Ware was rescued from the harem slave quarters by assassin Kadar Ben Arnaud they both fled to Scottland. Selene falls in love with Kadar but although he loves her, he feels she is too young and he sees himself as first her protector. When Kadar boards a ship to return to honor a promise he has made to an extremely horrible ruler, Selene follows him and falls again into harms way. Their love grows for each other as fast as the danger to each grows as they seek a treasure which turns out to be a grail with magical qualities. This is a good verses evil story set in the 12th century with all of the great qualities of stories of this time period. It was slow at first but picks up about halfway through and was a page turner in the end.

From the back cover....

Two unlikely treasure hinters..
Lady Selene Ware was nothing more than a harem slave when reformed assassin Kadar Ben Arnaud helped her escape to her native Scotland. But she still wasn't safe from the sheikh who claimed her as his property-and who now forces her and Kadar on a quest to find the most powerful religious relic of all time.

One perilous journey...
So begins a dangerous odyssey that leads Selene and Kadar to an encounter with the reclusive Tarik, who now possesses the treasure. The closer they come to discovering its secrets, however, the closer they will come to losing each other-and their lives.

The stakes couldn't be higher...
The truth is far more explosive than the treasure hunters could ever have realized. Even as Selene grasps the key to this age-old mystery, Kadar is forced to step over the line separating the dark path from the light to save her from an unthinkable fate.

I think I enjoyed the first book more. I'm not sure what it is that made this one less enjoyable.

I loved all the characters and the dialogue and the paranormal elements. Maybe it was because I found some of Kadar's actions frustrating. I don't want to give away too much but he makes Selene wait for things until he deems she is ready. And his reasonings are usually very weak. They do a lot of hit and miss. When she wants him, he wants to wait and vice versa. It's a bit aggravating and there were times where I felt Johansen was lacking in plot so she would throw one of those scenes in.

Nevertheless, I don't regret reading it. I hope there will be a story of Vaden. By far, he is one of the most interesting character and I would love to know who Kadar and Selene will pass the magic to.
