If you like reading travelogues interspersed with first-time experiences about meditation, spiritual journeys, and finding yourself then you will enjoy this book. It begins with Michael Crichton's experiences as a medical student and his disillusionment and dissatisfaction with that career choice. From there he embarks on a personal journey which involves travel to remote villages, encounters with intimidating animals, treks to the highest peaks, spiritual connections, and a new understanding of one's self.

I found the book interesting because I learned many things about the author. The book is an account of his many travels and is biographical as well. Interesting reading for those who are Michael Crichton fans.

If you've ever enjoyed a Crichton book, I would recommend this one.

This is basically an autobiography of him in his earlier years which shows his experiences.

What surprise me most is that Crichton, with all of his scientific books, isn't exactly a normal scientific being himself; experiences with the paranormal seem to be the basis of this book and his journey.

I am an experienced traveler and very interested in this topic. Not Crichton's best. He is an engaging writer and the first half of the book held promise, as it held true to the title. The second half focused less on his travel destinations a experience and more on his increasing interest in and then affirming beliefs in out-there spiritual phenomena and experiences with mystics, channelers, etc. Perhaps interesting if you are interested in these topics, but not true to the theme of the book.

This was an interesting departure from the usual Michael Crichton books in that it was autobiographical. He seemed to only learn about himself while traveling. I enjoyed his frankness, his willingness to expose his foibles. The most interesting chapters were about his days during medical school. The pattern of the travel chapters was exposing another of his flaws in a different country. I became weary of this navel gazing aspect toward the end of the book. But overall, I would rate it as an interesting read. He was a brilliant author who died too young, in my opinion.
