Lockwood is an artist who's work I've loved and hated over the years. The reason is that I've played D&D for years and there have been a lot of his works that I've seen and have totally hated due to his interpretation of a character in a book. On the flip side of that coin, I've really like most of his original artwork that wasn't inspired by well-known fictional characters.

I also happened to find this book interesting and dull at the same time. There were some great images, but lack of quantity (and occasionally quality) because a few were just enlargements of sections of a piece. It got redundant and I felt it was just done to make the book thicker, but this could have been done better by having more variety of Lockwood's works.

The narrative in the book by Lockwood is dry at best. He's obviously a painter and not a writer. There were a lot of times where I felt he came off as feeling self-important by doing a lot of name-dropping of other artists. Granted, he also did try to sound humble, but it felt as if he was doing it to try and gain the reader's empathy. Either way, he's very long-winded and a bit boring.

Overall, it's a good book to read and look through once. Not a keeper for me, but then again, I've a lot of D&D books and novels with his work already, so I don't feel a need to hang on to this one.
