Randall Parker, a traveling salesman, is missing. Abby Parker is anxious because she hasn't heard from her uncle -- and he is all she has, as far as relatives go. After months of waiting for a letter, Abby decides to travel to Dangling Rope, Colorado, to find out what has happened. Until her uncle found her, Abby lived on the streets of Boston for 7 years, taking care of herself. She is confident of being able to take care of herself. However, the towns and citizens where Abby travels may not be so lucky; Abby is a walking tornado wherever she travels.
Since I've enjoyed every book/short story I've read by this author (after discovering her a few months ago), I was surprised that this book took a while to get into. Ms. Brownley's humor, while evident, just didn't bowl me over as usual. Actually, the whole story dragged. Maybe if 50 pages had been dropped, the story would have been more interesting, but maybe not. There was one absolutely insane subplot line dealing with the Ute Indians, helping with a train line they were against, and lady's cosmetics. You wouldn't believe me even if I tried to explain it in print.

pint -sized, pretty- and pure trouble. small as she is abby, holds her head high and shoulders square, a real lady does not throw a knife, or swear like a sailor.
