In 1775 New York City, Anne Peabody was forced into an arranged marriage with her father's colleague Mr. Merrick, the owner of a printing shop. On her wedding day she sees the Sons of Liberty and receives a kiss from young and handsome Jack Hampton--she never forgets the kiss, and the young man thinks her husband is her father. After her husband and young son die from smallpox, Anne struggles to keep her print shop open with the help of Sally and Titus, two fully developed, wonderful characters. As the city is taken over by the British, Anne's printing shop becomes a Coffee House, where she and Sally learn important information and provide it to Anne's brother, an officer in the Continental Army. Jack is never far from Anne's thoughts and his character and scrapes are fully-fleshed out too. History is interwoven with the romance, but neither gets short shrift in this wonderful revolutionary war story. I was a little surprised by the bawdy language though, it made me laugh!
