In Tolstoy's hands, the smallest details about a character build and build, until you know him inside and out.
These novels look at the hollow lives of people who pursue wealth and status at the expense of human relationships. Both show us how individuals can be redeemed, by opening to the mystery and spirituality of life, in the final moments before death.

The Death od Ivan Ilyich is an outstanding read as relevant today as ever perhaps even more so.Master and Man is not quite as insightful but a good read as well. This is the secong book I have read by Leo tolstoy and he is rapidly becoming one of my favourite writers.
