Apparently he was a popular columnist and I enjoyed reading several of the chapters on a long bus/subway journey to work. Much of his commentary is about Texas in the middle of the 20th C., but he wrote on Dallas in the early 1840s, when most everyone knew everyone else. See the chapter on John Nelly Bryan and his founding of Dallas.
Other personalities of special interest to me were Col. EHR Green, Silver Dollar Jim, Electra Waggoner, Ima Hogg, Lady Bird's dad, Cactus Jack Garner, and the invention of the hamburger.
