I like the Brazelton method of child rearing and potty training. He advocates a child-led approach to toilet training. He gives steps to follow to prepare your child to use the potty and eventually be fully potty trained. It's a short book, and easy to read. It's definately not a quick-fix to potty training problems- if that is what you are looking for.
