A Time To Stand: A Chronicle of the Valiant Battle at the Alamo
A Time To Stand A Chronicle of the Valiant Battle at the Alamo Author:Walter Lord From the front flap: — "The most famous battle in the bloody struggle to free Texas from the Mexican government took place at the Alamo. This stronghold fell only after a small band of Americans fought to the death rather than give up. Among them were doctors, lawyers, farmers, a blacksmith, a jockey, and a Baptist preacher... more ». They came from Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Illinois--eighteen states altogether. As a group they shared little in common except a fierce determination to fight for the liberty of the American people.
Walter Lord's A Time To Stand chronicles the migration of this brave band of men to Texas and their ensuing struggle against the Mexican army under the command of General Santa Anna. Hopelessly outnumbered, but determined to protect and defend the freedom they held so dear, they chose to make their final stand at the mission-turned-fortress called the Alamo. With little hope of receiving reinforcement, they withstood sporadic and debilitating nighttime assaults and cannon fire for thirteen days. On March 6, 1836, their heroic struggle ended. The Alamo fell, its defenders choosing death rather than surrender. The uncommon courage exhibited in its defense would make the Alamo a symbol of the indomitable American spirit for generations to come."« less
