a 14th century vampire romance
a different spin on vampires. Worth the read.
A great read!
I loved this book and was sorry to see it end.
After losing the love of his life, Brenna, in a horrible accident, Valerian wonders aimlessly. He meets his former tutor who helps him recover from his grief, and eventually turns him into a vampire. Valerian enjoys his life as a vampire, but it doesn't make him miss Brenna any less. He finds that once every century, Brenna returns as a human and he falls in love with her again. But every time their union is cursed and Brenna dies. Now it is 1995 and Valerian is appearing as a magician at the Venetian Hotel on the Las Vegas strip. Brenna appears again, this time calling herself Daisy Chandler. Daisy is a Las Vegas Homicide Detective investigating a series of murders. Young women are found with two small holes in their necks. Their blood has been removed from their bodies. The police dub it the "vampire killings". All of the victims have ties to Valerian, and he is Daisy's chief suspect.
I read this book in the early 90's and loved it. This time I listened to the audiobook. I'm not sure if my tastes have changed drastically or if it was the narration. The story set in 1995 was interesting. Daisy has a smart mouth and I liked the dialogue between her and her partner. Valerian had a slow cadence to his voice which was a bit hypnotic, but sometimes it would almost put me to sleep. I guessed who was behind the murders right away and don't know why Valerian didn't figure it out sooner.
The story continues with many flashbacks to different reincarnations of Brenna. Each were told with painstaking slowness. My eyes kept rolling back in my head and I kept waiting for the present day story to proceed. Finally, the villain was caught and we can all live happily ever after. My rating: 2 Stars.

Great!! I got so caught up in these vampires!!
What can I say? It's Linda Lael Miller. This book is part of her Vampire series. This story being about Valerian and Brenna. Brenna is the reincarnation of Valerian's first love, who died in Valerian's arms before he became a vampire. This, though, is her latest reincarnation. He has found her many times before, but she dies before he can re-awaken her memories of them. A wonderful read.
From his first passionate encounters with love and death in the dark days of the fourteenth centry to his dazzling fame as a master of illusion in the modern day Las Vegas, Valerian could never escape the joys and anguish of human desire. It was his fate from the beginning .... Shattered by the loss of his one true love, the enenchanting Brenna, Valerian surrendered his soul to the haunting solitude of endless night. Now once every century , his beloved Brenna returns in human form: a lusty tavern maid, a singer in seventeenth century London,a courageous woman of the Old West . Each time she awakens his souls awakens more. Valerian vows to never loose her again... no matter what the sacrifice. Awesome book
