The Falco series is my favorite mystery series ever - kind of Sam Spade in Ancient Rome. Clever, especially if you enjoyed Ancient History class.
I very much like Lindsey Davis as an author. Historically researched but the history only has a minimal impact on the story.
Highly entertaining series. Davis brings ancient Rome to life with her characters.
In this book, Falco stays in Rome and meets up with some very dangerous criminals. Lots of fighting and danger, friendships hanging on by a thread, and new emotions with Helena.
A very likable character in very interesting times. A favorite series for me.
Light reading, but very interesting about how the ancient Romans lived and conducted business set in with a mystery or two!

I just finished reading this book. We're back again in Rome, which is my favorite setting, as we get to meet again old friends and enemies of Falco. I feel it is important to read all the books in order, otherwise you may miss an important development in the relationships among the various characters. The Roman *police* was a fascinating topic to learn about. I found it interesting that the vigiles were supposed to be unarmed, just like the British "bobbies" before the 1970s. However, I got confused, because Petronius carries a sword. I will have to research this some more. Each new book makes me want to dig deeper into historical research.

Hardboiled detective in anchient Rome
Roman law allows every citizen condemned to detah "time to depart" in other words, time to skip town. No matter how hard Marcus Didius Falco worked to convict Balbinus Pius, the dirtiest underworld organizer in the empire, the man has gotten away scot free. Now as every crook in Rome is scrambling to take over Balbinus's scams, Falco has to deal with heists in the Emporium, murders in the vias, shady deals at the Bower of Venus not to mention his own forgidden romance with a senator's daughter. Meanwhile, Balbinus is said ot be on his way home. And if he is, Falco's life won't be worth a red centum.
