Troy Alleyn is finishing a portrait in the country during the Christmas holidays while her husband is finishing a case abroad. Her host (and subject)is a wealthy and eccentric man with an odd idea about rehabilitating ex-convicts (one-time murderers) and employing them as house staff. After some mysterious mishaps that point to each of the ex-cons as the culprit, one of the houseguests'servants goes missing during the Christmas show. As Inspector Alleyn returns home, he finds that Troy's host has requested for Alleyn to solve the mystery. A lot of unusual characters!
Another of the very good novels by Ms. Marsh.

Christmas at Halberds Manor was full of surprises. A traditional Druid Christmas pageant. And a corpse. There was no lack of suspects. Every member of the manor house staff was a paroled murderer. It was up to Inspector Roderick Alleyn to unmask the murderer of this Christmas kill.
Good Marsh mystery.
