jjares reviewed Tiberius: A Captivating Guide to the Life of Ancient Rome?s Second Emperor and How He Ruled the Roman Empire on + 3295 more book reviews
Tiberius, a Roman ruler, was preceded by Augustus Ceaser and followed by Caligula and Claudius. However, they are more remembered than Tiberius because he was one of the 'bad boys' of Rome. He abandoned his throne and lived on a Greek island, steeped in every debauchery he could improvise. Tiberius is considered a villain of Roman history. However, this book makes the point that he was broken by life; he felt he had no other choice.
This book is wonderful; it explains the history of Rome and its rulers from the time of the twins Romulus and Remus. It also explains the complex machinations of the early rulers (including Julius Ceasar) and why the citizens were unwilling to have an emperor. This is the first time I've read a sympathetic story of Tiberius and it was a genuine tragedy. Thank you for a clear explanation of the early Roman leadership; it explains a great deal about later Roman behavior.
