The deadly P-47 thunderbolt with the fabulous 56th fighter group in World War II.

Bob Johnson's autobiography was co-written with Martin Caiden. Johnson was one of the top-scoring aces in Europe while flying the P-47 Thunderbolt with the 57th Fighter Group, Zempke's Wolfpack.

The first-hand accounts of the training, getting the then-new P-47s ready for combat, and then the learning curve as the rookie pilots went up against seasoned veteran Luftwaffe fliers gives one a glimpse of a unique period in history.

Light, enjoyable, and an easy read, yet stirring and, at time, gripping, especially when he was in life-or-death combat.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in aerial combat before the time of guided missiles.
