A dark premise, exciting characters and a suspenseful spy plot. What more could one ask for? Well...the first half was both intriguing and sweet but I expected more fire from Anne and Jack in the second half, especially after their explosive first encounter.

This was my first Brockway and I absolutely loved it. For starters, it was the first Regency romance I'd read in which neither the hero nor the heroine are members of nobility. The "catch me if you can", spy vs thief mystery adds suspense without getting away from romance. The hero/heroine have sizzling chemistry. I wish it had an epilogue.

Spy and Intelligence Officer Jack Seward has been charged with finding a cat burglar who is stealing from society's elite. Trapping the thief in the act of stealing some jewels, Jack discovers that the thief is a woman...a woman who tries to use sex to bargain her freedom. But the thief escapes, Jack infiltrates many of the ton's parties in order to find her. Instead he finds Anne Wilder, a lonely widow who is chaperoning a distant relative. He never suspects that the beautiful Anne is really the thief.
After reading several reviews for this book, I really expected to like it more than I did. I never actually figured out the reason why Anne was stealing from the rich, except for the fact that they had promised a donation to her charity and never carried through. Both Anne and Jack are tormented by their pasts, and both have many secrets. And, both were totally obsessed with the other. I thought the story dragged in some places and wish it could have moved along a little quicker. My rating: 3.5 Stars.

Brockway's Books are always exciting
In Regency England a thief (the Wraith) is stealing jewels. Colonel Jack Seward is assigned to catch the jewel thief--but a midnight encounter surprises Jack when he discovers that the Wraith is a woman. Stalking the jewel thief by assimilating into the "ton's" parties, Jack soon becomes attracted to a widow with a checkered past. Will she be able to hide from him? Will he figure out that the demure widow is not what she seems?

Great book both characters are really enjoyable!
Really good read, a rather dark and very emotional story, with lots of sexual tension, but not so angsty that it's unbearable. The hero and heroine are unusual and complex characters. She's a widow and companion to a young lady during the day, but a cat burglar at night. His job is to catch the cat burglar, but he doesn't realize the quiet widow he is falling for has a secret life. I loved their flaws and anxieties. Jack is a very protective hero, which I like, and Anne was capable and independent, which I also like.
It's also unusual that it's written not only from their POV's but sometimes we are seeing things through the eyes of the secondary characters.
Great writing and well worth checking out.

Regency England, Anne Miller played a dangerous game. A widowed lady by day, by night she became a masked thief preying on society's elite. Then she fell into a trap set by Colonel Jack Seward, and escaped. Now Jack stalked her through the ton, never realizing the self-possessed widow he was attracted to and the thief he was hunting were one in the same.
I loved this book. It shows the faces of society in Regency England. You know who the characters are, but they don't. The chase is what the story is about. The chemistry is marvelous, you know they are made for each other and you are rooting for them all the way through.
