I got this book to help me understand my stepson better. It reads like a textbook. I was hoping for something with a little more "How To" and "What If" I never made it beyond the first chapter.

Gesell Institute of Child Development. Pretty accurate depiction of a three year old.
A great book for understanding where your child is developmentally. Answers the "Why?" of the often oppositional 3 year old. It definitely helped me understand what was going on in the my 3-year-old's mind. It will help you tailor your expectations and normalize alot of the behaviors that seem so outrageous at this age. I suggest it be used in conjunction with a parenting book that fits your value system (I like Nelson, Crary, and Faber & Mazlish), as it will help you to define what expectations are realistic and which are not. Also, skip reading the question and answer section in the back, it is outdated.
