I enjoyed this book, but am not sure I would have had I not been aware that it was an homage to Sense and Sensibility. I was able to recognize the characters only because I was "in the know", and wonder if I'd have given it a second look if I hadn't been.

A modern take on Jane Austen, this is a lovely tale of a mother and her two daughters who are abruptly jettisoned from their priveleged New York life after a divorce. Love comes and goes and comes again in unexpected ways.
I tried to get into this book, but I found it boring. I did see the connection between this book and Jane Austin, (who I love) but Jane Austin is more quirky and fun to read. This book was depressing.
Really great story, very well told, with memorable characters. As the cover indicates, this is a terrific beach book.
This book started slowly for me but then suddenly I was caught in its thrall, and could not put it down. Very witty, modern spin on "Sense and Sensibility". Despite knowing the storyline, there were lots of surprises and twists that I really enjoyed. Approach this book on it's own merits and you will enjoy yourself!
I started to read this book on an e-reader at Best Buy when my mom was shopping for a computer and it was so good I had to get a copy. I was not disappointed.

This book was depressing and boring.
Joseph Weissman is divorcing his wife of 48 years. His wife Betty and her 2 daughters regroup at a beach cottage in Westport Connecticut. Its a different lifestyle at the cottage than living off Central Park in the City. Everyone has issues to deal with. But hopefully everyone appreciates what all has done for them.

Such a slow read. I thought this was going to be a wonderful beach read, oh my goodness, it was painful to finish. The story of the end of a marriage, after over 45 years, and the impact this has on the 2 middle aged daughters of the couple. The Mother and 2 daughters end up moving from Central Park West in NYC to take up residence in a lowly cottage in Westport. I flipped through to see how it ends. Find a better beach read.
good book where one finds out who they are and what they really want in life, for some it's to late

I give this book top-star billing because I have not laughed out loud while reading a book in quite some time. This one did it for me ~ during a time I really needed to laugh! Author Schine is a wise and very witty woman and I am so glad I happened upon this novel, so I can read more of her books now. I knew it was based on Austen's Sense & Sensibility - an updated version (classy West Side NYC & Westport, CT) - but it played out so well in this setting: upper-middle-class, well-bred Jewish women - it stands beautifully on its own. Couldn't have been a better choice regarding the folly and foibles of the hapless Weismann women, who handle their sudden change in fortune with humor & grace. Their love interests (a young preppy actor, an aging charismatic author, a kind, "semi-retired" lawyer) balance things out in the end... one of the best Austen adaptations I have read.
