First Line: An hour to midnight.

Thus begins another edge-of-your-seat wild ride through Stockholm with the Swedish writing duo of Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström. It is a ride in which timing and preparation are everything to Piet Hoffman, an ex-con who's deep undercover for the Swedish police in order to sabotage the Polish Mafia's attempt to control drug distribution in Swedish prisons.

When Hoffman is witness to a drug deal that leads to murder, Inspector Ewert Grens, a relentless bull dog of a homicide detective, threatens to ruin the entire mission. Hoffman is sent to a maximum-security prison as the final segment of his assignment, but his handlers are afraid that he will tell of the government's illegal involvement in his task. As a result, they blow his cover while he's trapped in prison. With seemingly everyone wanting him dead, the odds against Hoffman's survival are overwhelming.

Having previously read and enjoyed Box 21 by the same authors, I had great expectations for this novel, and although the first third of the book was marred by a very slow pace while all the elements were put in place, I was not disappointed.

What I liked most about Three Seconds was the way in which Hoffman had to anticipate each and every single event that might happen once he is in prison and things are out of his control. The intricate plot with its layer upon layer of detail reminded me of similar elements I enjoyed in Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy.

If you've read Stieg Larrson and are wondering what's next, sample Roslund and Hellström's award-winning books. Just fasten your seat belt first-- once these two put the pedal to the metal, there's no letting up.

Why the hype? (Review from Advanced Reading Copy, ARC)

I found this book to be fairly typical of Scandinavian crime fiction (Mankell, Wahloo, Sjowall). I did enjoy aspects of the book that addressed various issues of illegal drug usage in prisons. One half of this writing duo is an ex-criminal and he lends a certain factual credibility to the story.

Character development wasn't enough to cause any real emotional attachment. I never felt that I cared one way or the other about them. Prose was very "dry" and lacked any humor and dragged a lot.

Given a choice of only one word, I would choose "confusion". Sometimes I just felt like I "missed" something. The chapters bounce back and forth between story lines, as many novels do. However it didn't work here because of the lack of clarity at times. The details needed to be tightened up or maybe it is an editing issue. I found myself editing as I read. That's pretty distracting.

All in all, I have to say I can't figure out the basis for the major award this won in Sweden. The hype on this is tremendous so I am sure there will be readers aplenty. But chances are they will be asking themselves the same question that I did: "What did I miss?"

This was a pretty good read. The storyline was really interesting and kept your attention. Really made you think that it could happen and probably has happened. Three seconds will take on a whole new meaning for you.

Billed as another "Stieg Larsson type" offering from from Sweeden I was thrilled to see it land on my reading shelf. I got almost 100 pages into the 485 page book and realized I had no idea what the book was about, nor who the people I was reading about really were. I knew sort of what the story line was (I had read the 1st 20 or so pages twice). The list of 19 people in the front with short descriptions labled as "Cast of Characters" helped some, but I found that few of the names I ran across were listed in the 19 there. I finally gave up. Best of luck to the next person on the list, I have it off my shelf gladly and move on to the next book.

I really expected tp enjoy this book. Why not, great reviews and a great setting. I could not, however, get past the first 50 pages of this book. First, the subject matter, drugs, is my least favorite subject to read about. Second, the book was boring, and finally, most of the characters were unalikeable. I doubt that I'll read anymore from this writing team.
