Don't let the title fool you. This is not a book about evangelists in the American sense of the word. Rather, it's a story of three, young Parisian historians living together in a house. When an uncle joins the household, he dubs them the three evangelists (read 'apostles') because their names are the French equivalent of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

The well-crafted plot revolves around the three men, with the help of the uncle, a retired policeman, investigating the disappearance of a neighbor. But along the way we get to know an amazing array of major and minor characters and learn a little bit about the scholar's areas of expertise - the Stone Age, the Middle Ages, and WWI warfare.

A special bonus, which added depth to the story, was the way in which each of the main characters applied the knowledge from their narrow studies to gain insight into people and solve their current problems.

The three evangelists, title of this book, refers to three young men, down-and-outer who study history, who have been dubbed this name by an uncle of one of the men. They move into a dilapidated house and meet their neighbor, Sophia Simeonidis, a well known opera singer. She is troubled about a tree that suddenly appeared in her garden. Where did it come from? Who put it there and why? Then Sophia herself disappears but no one knows why or where. Weeks pass when a car containing a burned body is identified as hers. Someone has murdered Sophia. Her husband, her ex-lover, her best friend or her niece who recently moved to live with Sophia and is an heir. It is up to the Mathias, Marc and Lucien, the three evangelists to discover who did the deed.
