The cover bills this as a "Companion to "The People Could Fly," by the same author. That was a book of African-American folktales, while this contains many short chapters about famous and less-famous Black people during the period of slavery in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, with a short afterword on the period from the Emancipation Proclamation until the present.

As always, Virginia Hamilton is a master writer for children, and the book is enhanced with the great illustrations of Leo and Diane Dillon.
