A beautifully written (gorgeous, evocative prose) Western magical realism novel set in the US West as the railroads are being completed.

A Chinaman (as he's considered, even though his background is different), having escaped a railroad company chain gang, avenges his beating, kidnapping and separation from his new wife whose father hates the idea of his daughter marrying someone "other". Readers follow Ming Tsu on his journey of revenge. He meets FASCINATING characters and there are gorgeous descriptions of the landscape and weather and life itself. Highly recommended.
