Let me tell you that this is one of the best books that I have read in a while. I had heard the term "Tripoli Pirates" before but gave it little thought, however I now fully understand the guts that it took for our country, in its infancy, must have had in order to confront a problem in the area that the rest of the world chose to cower to instead of confront.
Several heroes emerge in the book under the governance of a strong and willing leader. I looked for reasons to give this book a less than 5 rating, but I came up with no such reasons.
Once you begin reading it, you will have difficulty putting it down.

Maybe it's because I have just come off a major Ron Chernow jag but I found this book to be very superficial and it diminishes history into a black and white scenario of good vs evil to a farcical, and even hypocritical, extent.
It's a shame because it's a fascinating period of history and a great story. I just wish someone else had written it.

An interesting, but simplistic, account of the events discussed.

I had heard about President Jefferson and the problem of the Barbary pirates, and this book increased my knowledge about the military and diplomatic efforts to overcome the terrible cost of bribing the pirates to leave our ships alone. I love history, and this book was well-worth reading.
