Anna Langtry, seventeen and forced into a polygamous marriage to become one man's third wife, escapes on her wedding night. Fifteen years later, Anna is working as a probation officer in Denver when she meets Joe Mackenzie, a white collar criminal convicted of embezzlement. As Joe looks for justice, he pulls Anna back into the past she left behind.

Good, interesting reading and offers a lot of insight into the polygamy way of life.

Very interesting book with a background that uses polygamist lifestyle (interestingly enough not entirely against it just some parts of it). Anna and Joe work to try and discover who is framing Joe for embezzelement and trying to kill them.

I only read this book, which had been in my TBR stack for a very long time, as part of a challenge. This is not the type of book I normally read and I knew nothing about the author but I am very glad that I read the book.
An underdog parolee (Joe) trying to prove that he really is innocent gets assigned to a parole officer (Anna) who likes to give underdogs a chance. Her past still haunts Anna and shapes all that she does but she is determined to help Joe escape from what appears to be a contract killer out to stop him from trying to find the real thief. The action moves quickly and has many twists.

A probation officer that grew up in a polygamous community. A white collar criminal that is just released from prison for a crime he didn't commit. Sparks fly and the action never stops.

I liked this book. It hooked me right away and I read it in one day. It was fast moving and I liked the characters right away. I had trouble figuring out the answers until nearly the very end.

Great book. As a 17 year old, Anna escaped a polygamous marriage. Fifteen years later she is a parole officer in Denver. Joe is an ex con who is out to prove his innocence. There are some rather major coincidences in this book, but Cresswell's writing, her exploration of character and development of plot supercedes make up for it. Highly recommended.

A good read. Entertaining, somewhat suspenseful. It was slow at times a major page turner at others. A pretty quick read.

A very good read. As per the book:
On her wedding night, seventeen-year-old Anna Langtry stole her husband's care and fled into the darkness, racing toward freedom. She felt only desperation to escape the nightmare of her Colorado home - an isolated rural commununity that condoned her forced polygamous marriage to become on man's third wife.

Fifteen years later, Anna is working as a federal probation officer in Denver. A fighter for the underdog, even she cannot escape the cynicism of her profession. She doesn't expect much from her newest parolee, just the usual sob story about being innocent and misunderstood. But Joe Mackenzie is different.

A white-collar criminal convicted of embezzlement, Joe is tough, quiet, determined... and innocent. Now he's looking for justice. And he's about to pull Anna into his world, one that will lead her back to the past she'd left behind -- one that will reach out to ensnare them both in its dangerous secrets and deadly schemes, where the passion between them is threatened by the grim reach of murder.
