Helpful Score: 1
In this book, James Herriot is in his mid-twenties, married and has a new baby boy. He writes about his experiences while in the RAF during World War II. He often compares the situations he finds himself in to memories he has working as a vetrinary surgeon before he enlisted. He has such a wonderful way of writing, the way he describes the countryside, the people there that he has grown to love, his love and soft-heartedness for animals. He has a way of poking fun at himself and making these adventures sound so funny. There are a few times when certain stories made me cry, too. I just love this author and his books and this one is another 5-star rating.

Part of a wonderful series - comical and enjoyable stories. A lovely, light read with insights into human and animal nature...

I love all the James Herriot books. Even though the veterinary medicine used then mostly no longer applies now these books still give a wonderful feel for the life of a mixed practice veterinarian.

This is one of my favorite books. I can't think of a single reason to not read this.
Life is a little challenging for me right now, and I find that I can't get enough of James Herriot. I adore animals and I find his writing to be funny, warm and comforting. I may like ACG&S and ATB&B a tad more, but this one is wonderful too. It takes me away to somewhere ~completely different~ which is just what I need at the moment :)

Readers adored his tales as a Yorkshire animal doctor in All Creatures Great and Small and All Things Bright and Beautiful--now James Herriot treats us to another delightful volume of memoirs rich with his own brand of humor and wisdom.
In the midst of World War Two, James is training for the Royal Air Force, while going home to Yorkshire whenever possible to see his very pregnant wife, Helen. Musing on past adventures through the dales, visiting with old friends, and introducing scores of new and amusing characters--animal and human alike--Herriot enthralls us once again with his uncanny ability to spin a most engaging and heartfelt yarn.

I pleasant read about a country vet during war time. Herriot discusses some of his war experiences going through RAF training and intersperses memories of his home and job. Generally uplifting and positive, it follows in the tradition of his earlier books.

A wonderful read if you want chapters that are like short stories. There is little connection between the chapters and no plot other than disconnect episodes in Mr. Herriot's life. I totally enjoyed the book after I realized it was a series of short stories.

This is my least favorite of the books, but that does not mean it is not a great book. It is still a good book, I just don't like the look into military life. But it is still a great read.
