A set of 4 interrelated perspective tied together by Miles Garth, a man who locked himself in the upstairs bedroom of his dinner party hosts, showcases Ali Smith's mastery of her craft but There but for the required a lot of attention to read. It's not easy for one's writing to come across as tangential (in the psychiatric mental status exam sense) in so many distinct voices. I can see why critics added it to the 2012 edition of 1001 books you must read before you die.
