After discovering this author in A PIONEER CHRISTMAS COLLECTION recently, I've searched for more Cynthia Hickey's books. This is the marriage of two of my favorite themes: Texas Rangers and Harvey Girls. Fred Harvey was an innovator and brought a high standard of dining to the West. I've read about Harvey and his sons and find the whole concept amazing for that day and time.

Katie Gamble is hiding out from her stepfather because he wants the deed to a piece of property in Missouri, now that Katie's mother is dead. Recently, oil has been found on the property. Katie's stepfather has filed charges against her, claiming that she's stolen his deed and other important papers, plus his money. Katie thinks that hiding as a Harvey Girl in a small Texas town will save her until she can figure out how to claim her property.

Unfortunately for Katie, Texas Ranger Ward Alson has recently been shot while pursuing a criminal and has been sent home to recover. Ward's sister is the manager of the local Harvey House and Ward notices that there is something strange about a very attractive Harvey Girl. When Ward notifies his Captain about the strange circumstances, his Captain tells him to investigate.

Much about Katie is innocent, yet she has a story she won't tell. When Katie's stepfather arrives to accuse her directly, Ward gets really involved. This is an inspirational story which means that God plays an important part (which was true of the time outlined in this story). This is really enjoyable.
