Although there are several books in this series (see below), I picked up this novel and didn't feel lost in Book 8 of the set. Just to let you know, explanations are clear without being redundant.

Essentially, this is the Hatfields and McCoys. But unfortunately, the families have a feud of long-standing.
Dustin and Chaim McCutcheon are in court to help a friend. However, in one of the earlier cases, Sidney Calhoun speaks up for her brother, Noah, a seventeen-year-old college boy accused of causing extensive damage to a business in town. The judge, a friend of Dustin's father (who is well aware of the bad blood between the families), assigns Dustin as a guardian to Noah. He also requires Dustin to hire him until Noah earns enough to pay for the damages. According to Sidney, Noah, Dustin, and Chaim, this is not the judge's most brilliant decision,

Sidney does not trust the McCutcheon family to treat her brother fairly, so she demands to accompany them to the Rim Rock Ranch and watch out for her brother. With no other choice, the McCutcheons agree.

By the time of the big showdown between the McCutcheon's and the Calhouns, it turns out to be much about not much. The reason behind keeping the secret about the conflict was downright laughable and unbelievable. My other gripe about this book is that the author, like a juggler, spends so much energy keeping the many plates aloft (different strains of the storyline of this 11-book series) that she dilutes the value of the current book. One example: The author wasted lots of ink, keeping the reader apprised of Chaim's concerns about his betrothed coming back to marry him. Of course, she's not, but that's another story. This family's drama didn't pull me in enough to want to tune in again for another story.
