Autobiographical/historical account of a young English woman who attends Oxford until leaving to contribute to the war effort (WWI). As a nurse, she works in London, Malta, and in France near the Front. After the war she returns to Oxford. The middle of the book (nursing) was the most interesting to me. The first part is a good account of life before the war/academia. The post-war section I skimmed over; the author became more political/socialist. Some of the story is very sad; it is remarkable how many died in this war, and how many lost multiple loved ones as a result of the war and its aftermath.
