This author's engaging writing style led me to this book. Cutting for Stone was the first book of his that I read (and highly recommend). The Tennis Partner is autobiographical, giving the reader insights into the author's emotions and thoughts through a period of difficult life transitions and how one friend and tennis impacted that time. The author is a physician and the medical setting and details form a fascinating background for the story. I am ençouraged by the author's commitment to his patients. I don't play tennis so those details were lost on me but did not detract from the story. If you are a tennis player, you'll have additional enjoyment. The tragic life of the authors friend and tennis partner illustrates the struggles of drug addiction not only for the addict but also for those around him, trying to care for him. Skillfully written.

Excellent, but sad. Two doctors become close friends, but the new, younger doctor can't overcome his addiction to coke.
