Though this western was issued under Ralph Compton's name it was written by Joseph West as is true of several others Mr. West has done in recent years for the Ralph Compton continuing series. Mr. West is an accomplished writer in his own right having recently written 5 westerns in the Gunsmoke series and half dozen others under his own name.

I enjoy all his writings having most on my western shelves, and especially this latest book about the Whoop-up trail running from Montana to Fort Whoop Up and a little farther to Fort McCleod, both in Canada. This book not only has a good story line it also contains some historical information of the actual trail itself.

Essentially a rancher, young cattleman is taking cattle to Fort Benton to sell, but becomes embroiled in taking several 'ladies' of questional reputation farther north into Canada to become brides of miners in that area. The scheme is a con with shady characters standing to profit. Along the way we meet Crow and Blackfoot Indians, bushwhackers, and a few decent folks. The journey is long and hazardous, while our hero meets up with a giant, grey wolf who saves his life a couple times.

If you are looking for an enjoyable read on the western scene, especially a trail little known by most western readers, try this one.
