I liked this book but I didn't LOVE it like book 1. Book 1 was such a fun book that any other book in the series has a tough act to follow. I did read it, laughed alot, and enjoyed the characters. However, it felt like I've "been there, done that".

I thought about giving it 3 stars but that is really unfair. If I had never read book 1, this would have been possibly a 5 star book. I always pride myself on rating each book in a series on its own merit. So, on that note, I settled for 4 stars.

Isabelle was a sweet and courageous heroine who took on the responsibilities of running a safe house for women, and her childhood story was interesting. I appreciated that she was a survivor. However, her hero, though a decent, kind fellow, just wasn't developed enough to do her justice. Normally I don't like the author to focus so much on secondary characters, but in this instance they definitely needed development to get them out of their cardboard mode. Overall, A very mediocre tale. If you're looking for a romance with a more substance, look elsewhere. 3 stars.

A nice book with sexy hero and compelling heroine. However I think the weakness of their mutual "secrets" diminished the story. Her secret, which as readers we'd known for most of the book, just didn't seem powerful enough to be the big deal that she made of it. His secret, a supposed love in the past, was ridiculous because it both painted him as a bit of a cad, and also a flake since he evidently fancied himself in love with a married woman whom he'd met three times. The reveal of their secrets was a big let down, I'd hoped for something more monumental.

Overall the story was enjoyable and I'll read more from MacLean, but I thought this one could've been better.

Women are swarming after Lord Nicholas St. John after being named "London's Lord to Land" in a ladies magazine. To get out of town quickly, he takes a job tracking down the sister of the Duke of Leighton. Nick along with his Turkish friend, Rock, tracks Georgina to Townsend Park in Yorkshire, where she is staying with Lady Isabel Townsend. Isabel helps women in need of shelter. So far she has kept her runaways under wraps, but Nick just might find out the secrets hidden in the home and ruin the future of Isabel, her brother, and the women she's protecting.

This is the second book in MacLean's Love by Numbers series. It is a good story but has no real surprises or originality. We've seen everything that happens in this book in other historical romances. Compared to the first book in the series, this book is lacking; but it is still a good story with interesting characters. My rating: 3.5 Stars.
