Ugh. It could have been a good story but the author just told the story too fast. The H&H were in love too fast, things resolved between the girls and their father too fast, revelations about their past danced through in the first page and a half. I get that this is a combination of characters from two continuing series and the author doesn't want to waste a lot of time with exposition but that's not an excuse to completely skip actual storytelling.

Nothing developed at a natural pace, even the vicious scarring of the heroine happened too fast. Nobody seemed particularly rattled that someone was in their home and attacked Belle. Then Belle herself recovered immediately from having her face slashed open followed by someone stitching it back with a needle and thread. Wouldn't that have hurt - a lot? Wouldn't her face be swollen and sore and she'd be physically exhausted, probably in bed. Wouldn't there be an emotional toll? Not just fear of people finding her ugly, but fear of the dark, fear of crowds, typical PTSD type of stuff? Wouldn't she be upset about her own appearance, not just her assumptions about how others would respond? NONE of this is addressed. One minute she's slashed, the next day she's back working in her garden. The whole book was like that.

Won't be reading more from this author.
