Devon wants to form a merger with Ashley's father, except the father wants him to marry Ashley, too with the condition that she never find out. Devon reluctantly agrees, seduces Ashley, and SHE falls in love with him. After the wedding, on the wedding night, she finds out the truth and is devestated. They have an argument but the next morning, Ashley says she wants to make the marriage work so she decides to reform herself. She learns to organize parties, dress well, cook, and clean up after herself. Then, on discovering she's pregnant, she tells Devon she's leaving him because she deserves better and shouldn't have to change.
I agree that Devon is kind of a jerk but he was understandable. Ashley, on the other hand, is a full grown Tinkerbell. She is a clumsy, flighty, immature dreamer. She has no aspirations, gets emotionally distressed often, and whines a lot. When she decides to reform herself, she learns to pick up after herself, like she's still 5. Also, our Ashley suffers migraines. Which means anything stressful causes them. And she gets them A LOT. People like her have the "nothing bad can happen to me," mentality so they have no coping mechanisms in place to deal with it. Ashley exists only to be coddled and I think Devon was spot on when he told her to grow up. The ending was well written nonetheless.
