I've read many books by Koontz before, but this was the first one that I just could not quit reading, and the first one that kept me up all night listening for strange noises. Wonderful creepy apocalyptic novel.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is amazing, spine-tingling and thought provoking at once. I never wanted it to end & I recommend it to anyone who will listen!

Dean Koontz keeps you on the edge of your seat through the whole book. Love his stuff!!

This is a great suspenseful book. So good and a surprising ending. I love Dean Koontz. I had never read his books before, but now I am as big a fan of his as I am of Stephen King. A master storyteller.
Helpful Score: 5
The beginning hooked me (which is why I bought it). The middle started to confuse me - where is this story going? The ending annoyed me - the author headed in a completely different direction that I am still convinced doesn't fit. The first half is compelling, at any rate.

This book captivated me from the beginning and I could not put it down!! I read it in one day~!~ If you like Dean Koontz, you will like this book.
Helpful Score: 3
I wanted to like this book. It had the elements to be a very scary and creepy psychological thriller. I found that it was lacking in, well, everything. I have found that Dean Koontz is hit or miss with most of his novels and this was one that missed the mark with me.
Helpful Score: 3
this is by far one of the scarriest books i have ever read!

"Taking nightmarish fears to the next notch, Koontz delivers his creepiest and most horrific story yet. This apocalyptic thriller is truly haunting."
Gripping, fascinating, unusual, haunting!

This is Koontz in top form. I could hardly stand to put it down. The story is gripping and the characters are appealing. If you enjoy reading about the struggle between good and evil, then you will like this book.
Helpful Score: 3
I really enjoyed this one... it's an 'end of the world' scenario... (sort of in the vein of Stephen King's The Stand).
Helpful Score: 2
This is a book about the destruction of the world. It contains graphic imagry and imaginative concepts. It takes your prespective and challenges it. Who is it that is destroying the world. God? The devil? Aliens? Is it just the product of the main characters writing (she is a writer)?
This book was amazing. You fear for the characters. You don't understand why the horror around them is happening. My theries changed over and over again. And then you even question yourself a little. I gasped. I cried. I most certainly didn't laugh.
2 thumbs up (because I only have two thumbs!)

This is a surprisingly great science fiction book. I was expecting the usual deft horror novel Koontz writes, but this one really surprised me. It's at the top of my list, for subtle, thoughtful science fiction.

WONDERFUL, one of Koontz's best work, couldn't put it down.

Didn't enjoy this book as much as some of Dean's earlier writings.

I think this is one of Koontz's best. Quite a story. If you can read backwards you can get an early clue as to what could be going on. That's all I'll say about that.

Incandescent Koontz strikes again. This "end of the known world" novel doesn't disappoint from it's cast of loveable heroes to its "monsters". I highly commend it to Koontz readers.

I found this book very realistic and scary. I could actually put myself in the village peoples shoes and FEEL what they were feeling and experiancing as they worried, wondered and explored options of which were very few. With time so short, this book is well worth taking the time to read it. It held me spellbound and I couldn't put it down and neither will you. I give it 5 stars!!

I picked this book up 6 years ago, started reading it on a rainy night. I stayed up until I had finished the book the next day. Wonderful and scary. I never read much before this book, but now I read everything I can get my hands on. Dean Koontz is amazing!
Helpful Score: 1
Very scary book - especially if you have a heartpounding, vivid imagination. The end of the world through Koontz eyes is pretty much my idea of all the ghouls and boogeymen I'd shoved into my closet when I grew out of childhood. Koontz does a great job of cracking that door open again!

Dean Koontz. What else needs to be said?
Helpful Score: 1
This story hooks you in quickly and definitely makes you start looking over your shoulder. Koontz is a master of sprinkling in clues throughout the storyline that all make sense in the end. From reading other reviewers, it seems the only people who weren't fans of the book were ones that didn't quite get it. This may be one of those books worth going back and reading a second time if you first finished confused or disappointed.
An isolated community must battle against "something" to survive in fog-shrouded death traps.

I have been a Koontz fan for many years and have read almost all of his books, but i just could not get into this one.
Helpful Score: 1
I really enjoyed the suspense and imagery of what was going on and I couldn't put the book down - until I got to the last pages. Then, to me, the story fell apart. The wrap-up was too sappy, formulaic and it left way too much unexplained in the guise of "well maybes this is what happened".
Helpful Score: 1
Only my second Deen Koontz. Had no idea I was gonna be scared out of my wits! Read it in two days, so it's a page turner. Me personally, I couldn't handle the sci-fi freakiness of the book, so I probably won't read anymore of Dean's.
I thought it was a good book. It has recieved som bad reviews, but it kept me turning pages. I kept waiting to figure out what the heck was going on.
The classic Koontz thiller. A couple awaken to rain and discover that something is not right. They learn of disturbing extreme weather all over the globe.
I loved this book, being a thriller it kept me in suspense throughout. The best part of the novel is the ending, which when you are finished will make you think over the entire book, very unusual ending, I highly reccomend
I don't understand why so many Koontz fans got upset over this book. The author writes what he envisions, not what follows your personal beliefs...bleh....anyway.
I LOVED this book. I thought it was fantastically written, the characters were perfect and the ending was a total surprise!
I reccomend this times 20!
Great story, great writer, great finish.

A great sci-fi/horror in typical Koontz style. I just didn't care much for the ending.
I very much enjoyed this Koontz book. I usually like his books, but this is one of my favorites. Great idea and plot and an uplifting ending!!
I enjoyed it. It was slightly scary but a good fast read.
"On the morning that marks the end of the world they have known, Molly and Neil Sloan awake to the drumbeat of rain on their roof. A luminous silvery downpour is drenching their small California mountain town. It has haunted their sleep, invaded their dream, and now, in the moody purple dawn, the young couple cannot shake the sense that something is terribly wrong.
...soon the Sloans and neighbors will be forced to draw on reserves of courage and humanity they never knew they had. For within the misty gloom they will encounter something that reveals in a shattering instant what is happening to their world - something that is hunting them with ruthless efficiency."
A slam bang, all-out thriller! I love Koontz, and this is one of his most memorable works.

Interesting & attention grabbing
This is my favorite of Koontz novel so far! It kept you guessing up until the very end.
Koontz's attempt at Steven King horror.
The plot takes off dramatically and kept my attention with horrific circumstances and sympathetic characters. I wanted to see how they would survive and how they could overcome the devastating circumstances.
The ending fell flat - almost "and then I woke up" type of conclusion, with a subtle morality message.

It's been a while since I read this book. It's not one of my favorites of Koontz, but kept me interested enough. It was a little too "out there" for my taste.
I didn't like this book.

I love this book. Excellent read from a great writer. Book of Hope and finally faith
Freaky end of the world scenario. I thought that it took far too long to explain and the tension never really let up throughout the whole book.
Seemed like a good story but as it went along it became more and more lame. The ending was close to non-nonsensical. It seemed that the writer got to a point and then suddenly wanted to go do something else so he grabbed a premise and threw it into the ending.
Started good then by the middle it got repetitious and draggy and preachy.
I went to Amazon to read reviews and had to laugh--150+ one stars, more than 5 stars! Pay attention to some reviews and this is one of them.

This Koontz book is one of my favorites! I could read it again and again!!
This has so far been my favorite Koontz novel. I thought it was genius as Koontz wove an intense and unique story. This novel left me speechless. It's amazing read.
GOOD, BUT HAD AN ANTI-CLIMATIC ENDING. WAS HOPING FOR MORE

More science fiction than horror. I didn't much care for the ending, but it was a good read along the way.
I thought this book was chilling and thought provoking. The story kept me captivated and I could not put it down until the very last page. I just had to know how it was going to end.
Really nice twist at the end.
Totally chilling! You can't read this one home alone.
A fantastic read. It was yet another book by Koontz that I absolutely could not put down!
One of Koontz's best...edge of your seat excitement; couldn't put this one down!
I like this book very much. Not as intense as some of Koontz's others, but still good.
like all of dean koontz you can expect to be scared out of your wits a good thriller.
This book is typical Koontz...Boogie-Man versus Hero who saves the day. Plot twists, unexpected turns. This is why we love Dean Koontz.
I am a Dean Koontz fan. I feel that he consistently writes great horror stories that tap into everyone's more primal fears. This book is no different in that respect. It had me so scared that I had to keep looking over my shoulder as I read it. In the book, the world is being taken over by an unbeatable "alien" force that is as sadistic as it is purely evil.
I'd heard that, at some point, Mr. Koontz had a deeply religious experience or conversion and that, as a result, his more recent books had a definite religious or spiritual bent to them. I guess it must be true, because this book began to get that "feel" to me about two thirds of the way through and, sure enough, the last chapter confirmed my suspicions. He tied the whole thing up very neatly through biblical references.
I wouldn't let that turn you off of Mr. Koontz, though, if that's not your bag. Believe me, the book was SCARY and the horrible things that happened to people were just as horrible as they were in his "pre-religious experience" books. He's still one of the best in the business as far as I'm concerned and I'll continue to enjoy the chills down my spine that he so wonderfully produces.

Reminded me of War of the Worlds. Great thriller.
I was hooked from the first chapter. The way that everything in the world can be over turned by such beauty and mesmerizing amazement. And then slowly taken over by terror, death, suicide and murderous actions...only to leave the world with what I think as the morally right. Traversing across the country with only things you would think of in your darkest dreams and then being slowly captivated by the "new world"...where everything is as you make it. Seriously Dean Koontz at his best. I've read it at least 10 times & can not get enough!
This is Koontz'modern-day version of 'The War of the Worlds'... the ultimate disaster novel.
Koontz was my favorite once upon a time. This reminds me of those days.
this isnt usually my cup of tea but this was good
I've decided that I don't want to read any more Koontz books.
Really Good!
This book really makes you think about things. You know its fiction but still ....
This book was really hard to put down. Intriguing, one of the most intense that I've read from Koontz. At times it got to be too much, but I couldn't bring myself to put it down. Read it in about 2 days!!!!!
This was an interesting book. I've liked Dean Koontz for as long as I can remember, but I've shyed away from reading any of his books for the past several years because I've become a scaredy cat in my old age.
This book really wasn't that scary to me, just kind of creepy. Lots of religious undertones, which is fine by me.

Molly and Neil wake up to a phosphoresent rain and learn that aliens are attacking humans all around the world.
This is classic Koontz with sensational twists, surprising turns, and eloquent writing. It reminded me of an updated version of war of the worlds, with a different ending. Very good.
i have liked others better
Typical Dean Koontz. Makes a great beach read.
The end of the world as we know it....we are the hunted and nothing is as it seems. Great Dean Koontz!!
almose anything Dean Koontz writes is a good read. this is a great one. you will keep the pages turning. just dont read it while it's raining!
This book is more on the science-fiction side. Not my favorite kind of Dean Koontz. But not too bad.

The bible told us of Noah's Ark, Stephen King told us of The Stand, and Dean Koontz tells us of The Taking. Excellent book.
Very strange. Thankfully a quick read or I would have not finished it. I did like the ending.
This book was an interesting take on the end of the world. First of his books I have ever read. Very weird, kept you interested right until the end.
While being a great Koontz fan, and having found that while this book was quite readable and I was entertained without much work, The Taking wasn't one I really like. But Hey it's Koontz, and I just keep reading.
One of my favorite Koontz books. Rich story with deep characters. Very suspenseful. You really don't know what's going on until the end.
Very scary. Kind of The War of the Worlds mixed with Stephen King's The Stand.

Dean Koontz has done it again...edge of your seat reading!
Koontz is a scary writer. This book was as good as all the others I have read. I have been a fan since the beginning and he never fails to entertain.
I love Koontz's books! Another great scary book!
The novel features abundant suspense, as a couple in an isolated California home endure a phosphorescent rain and learn that, around the world, something is attacking humans and laying waste to communications.
Dean Koontz has done it again. Another beautifully done novel. Here is the back cover: On the morning that marks the end of the world as they have known, Molly and Neil Sloan awaken to the drumbeat of rain on their roof. Great imagery in the first few chapters... creepy tale.
Dean Koontz does it again in this creepy novel! Thrilling read!
One of Koontz's best books in my opinion. I've never been scared by one of his... until now!
I am a huge Koontz fan, but this one was not his best.. for those who haven't read all his books and aren't expecting better with each new book, this one may be just fine. The writing is good, the character well formed.. I just found it far too predictable and Koontz has always been anything but.
Very good story.
Koontz is in top form. A very good read.
One rainy night the end of the world began.
Suspenseful story ~ Koontz's idea of a world take over by alien beings ..
This book makes you look into yourself and examine your values. An entertaining tale that looks at life at the end of the world.
One rainy night the end of the world began...
Koontz never fail to write a good book. Great storyline and the ending wasn't what I expected but it was typical Dean Koontz. This is a book I'm sure I can read again.
Great Koontz!
Super!! Really enjoyed this book!!
One of Dean Koontz's better books. Once again, it is Southern California, and eerie things are happening. The beginning of the end.
This book kept me on the edge of my sit wondering what could possibly happen next.
I love Dean Koontz, and The Taking is a great work!
Not one of my favorite Koontz stories, but still a good read.
FANTASTIC! Finished it yesterday with a huge smile on my face ... best kind of book!
"...extremme weather phenomena across the globe...town loses all contact...they will encounter something that is hunting them with ruthless efficiency."
Really good!
A strange luminous rain marks the beginning of the end of the world as they know it for Molly and Neil Sloan and their rural mountain town.
This book was very difficult to set down! It was the first novel I've read by Koontz. Since this book I have read morebooks by him, but thought that they were very predicitible compared to this one. The ending was somewhat disapointing because it comes on fast and isn't as detailed as the rest of the story.
One of my favorite Koontz books.
THE TAKING is everything SIGNS should have been, but wasn't. It's eerie, compelling and believeable.
A luminous, silvery downpour is drenching a small California mountain town. The Sloans and their neighbors will encounter something that reveals in an instant what is happening to their world...something that is hunting THEM with ruthless efficiency.
It was a really good read! I would recommend it highly!
Great all nighter by Koontz, an interesting new take on a time old idea. Wish there was more to learn at the end.
All-out thriller...
What intrigues me most about Koontz' books, this for sure is no exception, is his descriptive abilities. I could absolutely conjure the surreal scenes (hopefully never to be experienced) being built by his words on the screen of my imagination. The Taking does not have much dialogue, and is for those who enjoy having their imaginations challenged.
A slam-bang , all out Thriller... but also poignant and noble, with heroism, self-sacrifice, and redemption as the order of the day. Tightly woven, action-packed, and terrifically Suspenseful throughout. -Flint Journal
I really enjoyed this book. It was different from Koontz's past novels, it had a much quicker pace and a dark feeling.
A very interesting look at the human reaction to "the end of the world"
How weird was this book. It was good even if it was a bit apocalyptic. The ending was a bit of let down compared to how intense the rest of the book was.
The rain fell. It fell all over the world. Some survived. most did not. Follow the survivors through another kind of hell..a good beach read!!
Very different, surprise ending
Chilling, supernatural story that kept me reading (and afraid to sleep at times) to the end. The ending surprised me and made me think long after the last page - not what I expected in the least, but highly satisfying.
Though I am turned off by Koontz's seeming need to win some kind of vocabulary test...this story is terrifying. A mix of sci-fi and ancient story - it's extremely interesting. Just bring your thesaurus.
Very good Book I reccomend reading it
One rainy night, the end of the world began in....The Taking.
With Dean Koontz you never know what you are getting into until the middle of the book but they are always a lot of fun to read.
I own this on audio so would like to find a new home for this copy. Koontz has been one of my favorite authors for over a decade and is one of the few whose books I continue to buy. This copy is registered at bookcrossing and has bookcrossing labels inside.
I LOVE some of Koontz's books, but this was ok to me - it's kind of science fiction, aliens stuff.
A bit scary in the beginning.
Book was a little bid too weird even for Koontz. After enjoying most of Koontz earlier novels like "Watchers", this one was a real disappointment.
Dean Koontz newest!
On the morning that marks the end of the world they have known, Molly and Neil Sloan awaken to the drumbeat of rain on their roof. A luminous silvery downpour is drenching their small California mountain town. It has haunted their sleep, invaded their dreams, and now, in the moody purple dawn, the young couple cannot shake the sense of something terribly wrong. As the hours pass, Molly and Neil listen to disturbing news of extreme weather phenomena across the globe. By nightfall, their little town loses all contact with the outside world. A thick fog transforms the once-friendly village into a ghostly labyrinth. And soon the Sloans and their neighbors will be forced to draw on reserves of courage and humanity they never knew they had. For within the misty gloom they will encounter something that reveals in a shattering instant what is happening to their world...something that is hunting them with ruthless efficiency.
Reads like a movie, strange twist at the end.
Great story line.....and for the most part (at least for me) unexpected ending until very near the end of the book.
Thought about it quite a bit.....and like the message, just don't want to live through it.

Scared me 1/2 to death. If this is the wrath of God then we are in trouble.
One of my all time favorite books. I've read this about five or six times. It's one of those books that you cannot put down and when you come to the realization of what's actually happening, your mind will be blown.
T.S.Eliot, UFOs, terrafarming, lots of goop, Alien plants and animals at their yuckiest, a throughly unappealing book. Will the failed writer and the failed priest save all the children from the bad aliens and give to the good ones? Not even as interesting as that might sound, a bored in the bathtub may as well read this stupid thing while soaking book. Don't forget...if the aliens get you, you will start quoting T.S. Eliot, which is how we know for sure you are dead.
I'm not a big Stephen King fan, but my husband is. I picked this one up after he had read it & really enjoyed it! Very suspenseful and hard to put down.
Sigh - sounds like another global warming book with a twist.
Great read. Got right into it.
An ultimate disaster novel.
Amazingly well written!
Excellent book
didn't even finish this one
Haven't read this one. It's my husbands book. He said it was good.

As hours pass and the rain continues to fall, Molly and Niel listen to disturbing news of extreme weather phenomena across the globe. Before evening, their little town loses television and radio reception. Then telephone and the Internet are gone. With the ceaseless rain now comes an obscuring fog that transforms the once-friendly village into a ghostly labyrinth. By nightfall the Sloans have gathered with some of their neighbors to deal with community damage...but also because they feel the need to band together against some unknown threat, some enemy they cannot identify or even imagine.
In the night, strange noises arise, and at a distance,in the rain and the mist, mysterious lights are seen drifting among the trees. The rain diminishes with the dawn, but a moody gray-purple twilight prevails. Soon Molly, Niel, and their small band of friends will be forced to draw on reserves of strength, courage, and humanity they never knew they had. For within the misty gloom they will encounter something that reveals in a terrifying instant what is happening to their world--something that is hunting them with ruthless efficiency. Epic in scope, searingly intimate and immediate in perspective, The Taking is an adventure story like no other, a relentless roller-coaster read that brings apocalypse to Main Street and showcases the talents of one of our most original and mesmerizing novelists at the pinnacle of his powers.
