Take the Honey and Run is the debut of the A Bee Keeping Mystery series set in Humble Hills, Colorado and featuring mystery author Bailey Briggs. Bailey was raised by her grandmother Blossom Briggs, aka Granny Bee before leaving for California. When Granny calls to say that she's broken her foot and needs some help on her farm, Bailey packs up her belongings and her daughter Daisy and returns to her hometown.
On arrival in Humble Hills, Bailey witnesses a confrontation between her Grandmother and town founder, Werner Humble. It turns out that Werner had been carrying on relationships with members of Granny's book club "The Hive", and then had the nerve to make a pass at her. Werner is found dead in his home, with the remains of honey smeared around his mouth, and Granny who raises bees alongside her two sisters, Aster and Marigold soon becomes the prime suspect.
Determined to keep her Granny out of jail, Bailey ignores warnings from Sheriff Sawyer Dunn to mind her own beeswax and alongside childhood best friend Evie Espinoza sets out to smoke out a killer. Plenty of suspects rise to the surface as Bailey discovers that Werner had a nasty tendency to use older women and also collect all kinds of information on townspeople that he could use for blackmail should the occasion arise.
A fun, fast paced mystery with likable characters, a furry companion, and just the right touch of romance. Several things about Bailey remain a mystery and there is no doubt that we will learn more about her in future installments. Truly, a great afternoon read.
