This book was "Beat" before the Beatniks arrived. Henry Miller was a poor writer in bohemian Paris in the 1930's, and he wasn't afraid to say exactly what was on his mind, no matter how shocking. This was banned in the USA until 1961.

Hailed as an American classic, the story of a down and out american artist living in Paris is both deep and lurid. A love it or hate it experience.

Not for everyone, Miller writes some of the most complex and insightful prose I've ever read. This is true stream of consciousness writing. A fascinating story - for adults only.

How did I ever think this was a good book when I was 18? Here I am 36 and I think this is pure trash. I re-posted if anyone's interested...

If you don't mind the frequent use of the F word or c--t, then his book is for you. It's hard to follow. Is this a story or just Henry Miller's rantings? I don't get it. I don't see how this made a 100 greatest American novels list.

Written about the time of Lady Chatterley's Lover, this makes Lawrence's novel seem as if it were a pre-teen chapter book. Replete with the "C-word" and a great deal more graphic, it is also an extremely bitter and angry work.
This ego-centric invective has all the trash you can hope for: senseless violence, rape, murder, gang war, animal cruelty. Did I leave anything out? If your tummy is a tad queasy take a whack at this one; you'll feel real well after a good heave. This is little more than a big pile of dung; enough to satiate the most ardent sophist.

I know this book has literary significance, but it was a chore to read. I now appreciate books with plots, no matter how razor-thin.

What makes this book great is how much Miller makes you care about the characters.

No, wait. I was thinking of something else. Never mind.

A classic tale by a true eccentric.

I read this book because it appeared on a book list of influential books &/or authors. I was not impressed.
Sexually explicit material.
