Topic: TAG-ging Historical Fiction

Since we currently lack a good way of identifying historical and alternate history fiction, I'd like to propose that we, as fans of such, make an effort to tag titles we are aware of, and to tag them consistently, using the same tag(s). For example, I tagged this title Alternate History. And this one Historical Fiction. If we do this consistently, we'll all have a much easier time picking out books we love. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to use these tags and suggest new ones. Ok, unofficial list of tags users of this genre have suggested; please help the effort by being consistent and using the same tags: Arctic (was Arctic Adventure, but Arctic has been far more widely used) Biblical Fiction (i.e. "The Red Tent"; this is different than "Christian fiction") Gabaldon's "Methadone" List (for fans of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series) Historical Fiction -- please try to avoid the misspelled "Historial (no "C") Fiction" tag, which pops up first Historical Fiction - Newfoundland Historical Mystery: Ancient (up to approx. 500 AD)

How would you classify Guenevere/Arthur related books? Historical fiction? I'm wanting to tag Rosalind Miles' books and hers don't really have that much magic in them. Any suggestions? |

I will try to assign tags as I'm browsing the site. For what it's worth, I think Arthurian fiction should have its own tag. There's so much of it: some more fantasy oriented and some grittily realistic. Edited to add: I just created two more tags: Royalty and Middle Ages. Hooray! I like the Arthurian Fiction one too! If no one minds, I'll keep a "standardized" list in the first post of headings folks have decided on, so they'll be easy to find.

What about books about the Civil War and books such as the First North American Series by Kathleen O'Neal Gear? Would those just be tagged Historical Fiction or tagged as Civil War or American West History? Thoughts anyone? |

Debbie-- I would tag them as both "Historical Fiction" as well as "American Civil War" (because other countries have their own civil wars) or whatever is appropriate. For the First North American Series, I'd tag them as "Historical Fiction" and "Prehistoric". I'll add Civil War to our subject list. I'm adding H/F books to Sea Adventure, Arctic Adventure, and Pirates. I don't know if anyone reads these other than me, but I love them so I'm tagging! I'm also going to be tagging H/F books set in NewFoundland and Canada, but I don't know how I'm going to word the tag yet. If there is already one made, I'll use it. |

I've added Historical Fiction - Newfoundland, Historical Fiction - Canada, and Historical Fiction - Vikings. Do you think the Vikings Sagas should be included with Historical Fiction - Vikings? Wouldn't viking sagas (I assume you mean the Eddas, etc?) be tagged with Ancient Literature, or ... I dunno, something to show it was written before (insert date here)? |

Added: Arctic Adventure Biblical Fiction Pirates Sea Adventure ********************* I've seen some books already labeled with the tag "Vikings". While I have nothing against Valli's excellent suggestions, I am somewhat hesitant to start a crop of "Historical Fiction - Adjective" headings, as I could see where they could get out of control (although I realize library subject headings do use this heirarchy). Is this a direction in which we want to go? Or do we want to use individual tag headings, and use more than one when needed, such as "Historical Fiction" and "Newfoundland" or whatever is appropriate? I'm truly seeking discussion here, not looking to be the tag-police :-) Though my personal (and thus highly biased) preferences are for short, non-heirarchical tags, I may be the only one with that opinion, and will edit the list to whatever the majority wish to use. I do agree that there are likely enough Viking fans (not the Minnesota kind) that they merit their own tag, whatever we decide for tag format. Putting "prehistoric" and "some-viking-tag" on it would still be appropriate. Cheers, Catt
