A story about a woman who spends her whole life battling multiple personality disorder. Very heartfelt and moving. Has been my favorite book since highschool.

I wish I could give this book a higher rating than 10. I could not put it down. It is about a woman Multiple Personality Disorder. It is very disturbing, but an Excellent read.

I liked the subject matter and the story of Sybil is very interesting. However, the author's writing style was not to my taste. It gets very clinical at times and slightly repetitive when describing the different personalities.

OMG , Sybil's life is so strange and confusing with her multiple personalities. A very good true account and the first I ever read on MPD. How unfortunate.

I read this book in high school, as every one of my friends did. Since then, I believe the author and/or "Sybil's" physician have come under some criticism for the account of the patient as written in this book. And, of course, MPD as a diagnosis (it's very existence) is controversial, also.

This book is by far one of the best books I have ever read, even though its way older than I am! :) I could not put it down. I would recommended this book to anyone who is interested in multiple personalities or anyone who just wants to curl up on the couch and read a great book. One word of advice: Make sure you have enough time to finish the book in one READING because you wont put it down! Its that good!

The true and extraordinary story of a woman possessed by sixteen separate personalities.

This is the true story of a woman so badly abused in childhood that she fragmented into 16 separate personalities to deal with it. It is hard to read but fascinating.

I don't get all of the good reviews here. The book is poorly written. There are also a lot of questions about it's truth.
If you have to read this book you should also read Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case by Debbie Nathan.
Neither is unbiased, but if you read them together you can get a fairly balanced view.

This book is generally understood to be a true account of a woman who suffered multiple personality disorder. It has recently been exposed as completely untrue. The woman represented as Sybil has stated that she was not aware that Schreiber was writing this book or that Schreiber had made up all this about her. I have to wonder now how much of what Schreiber wrote was true. I will allow that even if not true, her work still would make fascinating fiction.
