This is the third book in a quartet, but unlike the first two (My Enemy, My Ally and The Romulan Way), it cannot stand on its own. The plot is set up throughout the text, but the resolution won't come until the next and final book. The quartet has been a good read so far. Diane Duane has taken the known Star Trek universe and expanded upon it for us, and she weaves into her novels the characters of her own creation. K't'lk, who first appeared in The Wounded Sky makes a reappearance as her "daughter" K's't'lk.
