I believe this is Harris' first published mystery; it was originally published in 1981 and re-released in 2007. It's a very light, fun read. You can see elements of Aurora, Sookie, and Lily in the main character.

Absolutely devoured this in an afternoon! Being from the South, I understood all the nuances of small-town Southern living. I was thrown for a bit by how dated some of the attitudes really were in the story until I looked at the copyright date and realized it was written over 25 years ago (I think this may be Ms. Harris' first book?)

Now I know I will be hunting her series novels!

Harris's first novel about a young woman who believes her parents death was not a simple car accident. As events continue to unfurl in her small Mississippi town she tries to piece together the connection between a current murder and her parent's deaths.

I believe this is one of Charlaines best books, the writing, and the style are very comfortable! And the ending, WOW, didnt expect that!
There were a couple of spots in it, where I felt like I was watching the dumb blonde in a horror movie and Im going *idiot dont go thru that door!* But alas that is the way alot of people assume us women are like! HA

Surprising twist at the end. This wasn't my favorite of Charlaine Harris novels, but I really wanted to go back and read her very first book. It was a fast read and enjoyable.

I first discovered Charlaine Harris by reading the Sookie Stackhouse Mysteries and I really enjoyed her style of writing. I read A Secret Rage next, which was her second book, and then Sweet and Deadly, which was her first. I enjoyed Sweet and Deadly but I feel like the style of writing that I have come to love didn't start until A Secret Rage. There was a good twist in Sweet and Deadly. Worth a read if you like Charlaine Harris, but not my favorite book by this author.

Catherine Linton has returned to her hometown in Mississippi after the death of her parents. The police say they died in an accident, but Catherine isn't convinced. Taking a job at the local newspaper, she sticks around town in hopes she'll find some evidence of foul play. What she finds is the body of Leona Gates. Catherine's father was the local doctor and Leona was his nurse. Leona has obviously been murdered. Now Catherine is sure that there is something happening in this town that her parents and Leona were killed to cover up.

This was Charlaine Harris' debut novel. So many people loved it, but I had a hard time getting into this story. I never figured out why Catherine believed her parents were murdered. Was it just a feeling? Did I miss something? (Probably.) The story was full of appealing characters, but I never thought of any of them as suspects. My rating: 3 Stars.

Great characters and story development. I just wanted to know what happened to the main character after the mystery was solved.

Catherine Linton's parents were killed in a car crash but Catherine Linton is suspicious and so she returns to her hometown of Lowfield, Mississippi where she takes a job on the local paper. Her father was the local doctor and when his nurse turns up murdered, she is sure that it's connected with the death of her parents though no one believes here. Lowfield is like many small towns in the South, on the surface it seems like a nice place to live, under the surface there are secrets and Catherine is convinced that someone's secret is getting people killed. Charlaine Harris does a great job with this book, it has suspects but when the real killer is revealed it's a shocker. This is a book that's easy to sit down with and not want to set it down until you're finished, fortunately at 290 and a quarter pages, that's not a problem.

Catherine Linton returns to her hometown determined to discover who tampered with her parent's car causing their fatal accident. Shortly after she arrives, she finds a dead body in a shed on her property. Soon after, she discovers another dead body this time, the tenant renting a house she owns. The murderer has to be someone she knows and knows well. Someone she grew up knowing and trusting because this is a very small town. The ending is a surprise. I found this to be a very different kind of book by paranormal and mystery writer Charlaine Harris. I think it was probably her first novel. It is well worth the read if you enjoy any of her other books.

When her parents and two friends are murdered, Catherine Linton begins to be suspicious of people she has loved for years .

Sweet and Deadly combines the best of mystery and suspense, with a pinch of romance .

Catherine Linton came home to Lowfield, Mississippi convinced that the untimely deaths of her parents in a car accident was no accident -- but nobody believed her. So she stayed, taking a job at the local paper, to try to both convince the sheriff that she was right-and maybe convince herself she was wrong. After all, her father had been the town doctor, loved (she always thought) by all. To think he was killed was to think that one of her friends or neighbors has harbored some deep resentment toward him. Then she finds the dead body of the women who had been her father's nurse for many years. Obviously murdered. Now Catherine knows that she was not wrong about her parent's death. Someone in Lowfield has a terrible secret, a secret worth killing for. Not once, not twice, but -- when another body is found -- three times. And the killer won't hesitate to add more victims to the list, as Catherine gets closer and closer to the truth.
