This is a true story of a vicious crime carried out in 1860 England. A little boy, aged 3, has his throat cut and is thrown down the family's privy. Who could do such an unbelievable crime? The story is gripping, and the investigation is thorough. This audio book tells the tale of the lead investigator and his frustrating attempts to find the real killer. It is a tale of media outrage and popular opinion of the day. Public opinion and newspapers can undo entire careers and lead prosecutors down the wrong roads, which is seen in this story. This was a good book, however a bit long. The same story could have been told with fewer chapters. I found myself ready to get to the end about 2/3 of the way in.
