This is a fascinating and well-written account of Varian Fry and his colleagues who risked all to rescue Jews in Naxi-occupied France. Fry left a comfortable and safe life in New York and traveled to Marseilles with a list of cultural icons and political refugees who otherwise would have been put to death. Along the way, he helped many everyday people who were not famous. Interesting to read about how people react to being in danger and how they place themselves in danger to help strangers.
