The author's technical writing was okay. What she wrote was not okay for me. There was too much internal conflict, which can be a bore if overdone. None or very little external conflict. The author passed up several good opportunities for external conflict. She could have shown the heroine and the grandfather having more friction than what she wrote. After all, they were living in the same mansion. I would have added more friction between the jilted fiancee and her family at the engagement party. Lost opportunity. How about the party where all the hero's relatives came to the mansion to meet the daughter. These were wealthy people and a working class outsider who had broken up a wedding engagement. Another lost opportunity. The author just glossed over these things when she should have used them to her best advantage. The end result is endless narration and thoughts and very little friction and dialogue. Extremely slow pace. Boredom.
