Author: Nevada Barr
The inaccessible wreck, Kamloops, has rested at the bottom of Lake Superior for nearly seven decades, the bodies of its ill-fated crew eerily preserved in the frigid waters. Anna Pigeon, park ranger, trades the beautiful mountains of West Texas and unpleasant memories for the frigid north of Lake Superior duty and a mystery involving one two many bodies. How did a fresh corpse get on the wreck of the Kamloops, a ship buried under Superior's frigid waters for decades? Anna must investigate. I did not enjoy this one as much as Tract of the Cat simply because scenery involving water and teeth chattering conditions do not appeal to me. Anna, hurry up and return to the warm west!

I love this series because you not only have a great mystery, you also get to read about all the national parks (each one so very different from the others).

Another of Anna Pigeon's mystery series set in Minnesota on the shores of Lake Superior. Suspensful, unable to put it down, as are all of the Anna Pigeon series.

Nevada Barr is an excellent author who has her heroine, Anna Pigeon, work as a Park Ranger at various National Parks. The books evoke a longing to visit these places of natural beauty. This book takes place at the Isle Royale National Park on the North Shore of Lake Superior. I loved the story, as I have always been fascinated by the Great Lakes and the beaches and parklands that frame them. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and Lake Michigan was our playground. These amazing inland seas are awe inspiring, and this book is worthy of its setting.

While entertaining, the novel was probably a bit longer than it needed to be. But I think, after reading two of her books, I may have figured out how to determine who the author's criminals are. We'll see when I read the next one.

A must read, but hard to find early book in the Anna Pigeon series. Good mystery with numerous red-herring clues but a solid connection to the final clue. Introduces recurring character(s) and details noted in later books in series.

National Park Ranger Anna Pigeon has been reassigned to Lake Superior in Michigan. This is quite a change of scenery for her, having spent most of her career in desert settings. Among the shipwrecks in the lake is the Kamloops, a ship that sunk in 1927 with 5 sailors still aboard. Things begin to get interesting when a pair of recreational divers comments that one of the bodies looks so good, it's as if the person died just yesterday. When one of the locals turns up missing, Anna hopes the extra body with the wreck isn't his but unfortunately it is. Now Anna must determine who the killer is and why, not knowing that she could be walking into danger herself.

A Superior Death by Nevada Barr is the second entry in the popular Anna Pigeon series. This time the action takes place on Lake Superior in Michigan. I believe that part of the success of this series is that Barr periodically implements a change of scenery, which opens up new and fresh plot options. As a Federal employee myself, I can relate to the bureaucracy within which she works. Barr writes in a way that lets us get to know Anna and the assortment of colorful characters she lives and works with. This series is always an enjoyable read and I look forward to catching up on the rest of the series and look forward to hearing more from Anna Pigeon. I can heartily recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery without gore or tedious details.
