I really liked this story. It is a little different because we meet the heroine Lydia giving birth and praying for death. The Hero Ross is kind of a jerk in the beginning because he didn't want to be attracted to Lydia because she was a "tramp". Overall it was a great read.

This story starts with lots of promise; a young woman, Lydia Bryant, is dying while trying to have a baby. Two boys from a wagon train come upon Lydia's misery in the woods and notify their parents of the awful spectacle. Lydia's baby is born dead.

At the same time, a pioneer's wife in the wagon train has a son but dies during childbirth. Lydia has milk and no baby; the baby has no source of milk. Before long, Lydia is nursing Ross Coleman's son. Ross is overcome with grief with the loss of his wife, Victoria.

I didn't like Ross. He rapes his wife in a fit of jealousy. This is on the heels of his promising not to hurt Lydia. I had to force myself to finish reading this slow-plodding book. I don't plan to read the second in this series.
