Sunday morning and a need to wake up early.
Headache pang when rising;
a rush to get an Advil to soothe.
Stomach growl and fatigue
at the same time.
Hot shower cleans off the glitter and scent of beer.
Open those tired eyes.

Rush, rush.
Nice set of clothing that mom pressed
off for you.

Rush, rush.
“Why did I have to get up
so early? Why did I
go out so late
last night?”
Pangs in feet from those
heeled shoes.

Rush, rush.
Hair still smells like cigarettes while the
blow-dryer buzzes.
The nice set of clothing is wrinkling.

Rush, rush.
Makeup to hide the tired eyes; it
has a little glitter sparkle in it. Stomach
growls. Saltines will do the trick so not to
throw up during Mass.

Rush, rush
out the door, in the car and towards
St. Michael’s. In through God’s home, kneeling
down to confess last night’s
sins. Daydreams through the readings and the same cultic sayings.

Rush, rush
up to the altar to receive the
saving grace. Your chances to heaven is now that
much closer.

Sunday Morning Routine for a Roman Catholic

Rush, rush.
Need to wake up early.
Headache pang when rising;
a rush for an Advil to soothe.
Stomach growl and fatigue
at the same time.
Hot shower cleans off glitter,
the scent of beer.
Open those tired eyes.

Rush, rush.
Nice set of clothing Mom pressed
off for you this morning
as you slept off the alcohol.
She didn’t wake you knowing
how late you came in last night.

Rush, rush.
“Why did I have to get up
so early? Why did I
stay out so late
last night?”
Pangs in feet from those
heeled shoes.

Rush, rush.
Hair still smells like cigarettes while the
blow-dryer buzzes.
The nice set of clothing is wrinkling.

Rush, rush.
Makeup to hide the tired eyes;
it has a glitter sparkle in it. Stomach
growls. Saltines will do the trick so not to
throw up during Mass.

Rush, rush
out the door, in the car and towards
St. Michael’s. In through God’s home, kneeling
down to confess last night’s
sins. Daydreams through the readings
and the same cultic sayings.

Rush, rush
up to the altar to receive the
saving grace. God always gives second,
third, fourth chances when you sin.
Your likelihood to heaven is now that
much closer, or at least until tonight.

It is sad to think this is typical for way too many people.

At least you keep trying. God understands and forgives.
