This was a captivating story from beginning to end. I recommend this book to anyone looking for their next great read.
I try to write a review for all the books I like a lot, but I have never given a book as great a review as I will give this one. It was simply marvelous. It was beautifully written, made me smile and laugh out loud a number of times, and was the best description of pioneer life on the western plains that I have ever read. After reading it I have a new respect for those brave pioneers who settled our vast west and wastelands. The story was based on the notes and diaries of the author's family. It is a big book, but well worth the time it takes to read it and I would recommend it highly. You will have a greater appreciation for those brave women who helped settle our west.
Ok, so I LOVE historical fiction, but it has to be pretty event focused like the battle of Gettysburg or the divorces of Henry VIII etc so when a friend recommended this book I wasn't too sure.
It was a slow starter for me, probably because of the fictional characters, but I took solace in the fact that much of the story (ies) was given life from the personal journals and accounts of real people and trudged on. I am very happy that I did!
Rich descriptions and strong characters with whom you can identify give you nearly a front row seat to the settling of the west and the struggles of an ever changing economy and an emerging culture.
I'd recommend it!
