I was eagerly waiting this book after reading "the Dinner". Immediately started it and was put off by the author's constant reference to sex. The main character is a doctor who when he see his patients constantly wonders how they "do it", are they on top, on bottom, etc? It was very odd but even so, I found I could not put the book down. I was drawn further and further into the story. Just like "The Dinner" this book will leave you thinking and talking about it.

This is my last book by Herman Koch. The plots always seem intriguing, but the unpleasantness of the characters makes for a dull read.
Our main character is a Dr., who has nothing but disdain for his fellow humans. Now, while this is not unheard of in physicians, it does not make for a character to invest any time in.
His prime patient at the time is a movie star, who is in very bad health. The actor wants the Drs. wife and the Dr. begins an affair with his wife. He manipulates his family into getting to be friends with them.
The actor is ill advised to begin a new project, when he should be seeking treatment for a fatal disease. the Dr is blamed for his death.
And so it goes, with unpleasant people doing unpleasant things. As it was also in The Dinner. I will pass on the next offereing.
