Wonderful story about a young prostitute who come to find a new life in a new town. It is about the connection of Sugar and Pearl who need each other at a very important time in their lives.
Excellent book - the story is full of emotions - sadness, happiness, guilt, fear, hope
Sugar, a young prostitute, comes to Bigelow, Arkansas, to start a new life. She moves in next door to Pearl and Joe, who are still grieving over their murdered daughter. An unlikely friendship develops between Sugar and Pearl as they learn to trust each other and finally confide in each other. There are so many connections in the story between different people........it keeps the reader on edge. It makes the reader want to read the story carefully so as not to miss any of the connections. The author presents them in subtle ways, which is interesting. She doesn't blatantly throw them into the story.
Although the ending is realistic, I had hoped for a happier one.
I would read this again someday.

McFadden's style reminds me a lot of J. California Cooper, who IMHO is THE BEST African-American author I've ever had the pleasure of reading.
I was half-way through "Sugar" before I found out there was a sequel to the story, "This Bitter Earth". I promptly ordered the sequel and look forward to adding the rest of McFadden's titles to my library.
The characters were so real - it seemed as if they were people I actually grew up around...or with. The story drew you in from the beginning and held you until the end.
Excellent author, excellent book! Highly recommend!

Debut novel set in the south in the 1950's. Good story.
